The strength is visible. That’s the point.
Timber spine stairs whisper. Steel spine stairs speak clearly. Where timber brings warmth and natural character to the mono stringer form, steel brings something different; a precision and resolve that turns the structural element of the staircase into an unapologetic design statement.
At Allwood Stairs, we design and build steel mono stringer staircases for homes and commercial spaces across Sydney, the Central Coast and Newcastle. These are staircases for spaces that mean business. Considered, engineered and built to make an impression that lasts.
So, what exactly is a steel spine stair?
A steel spine staircase runs a single fabricated steel beam up the centre of the flight, with each tread projecting outward from both sides of that central mono stringer.
There are no side stringers.
No visible framework beneath the treads.
The spine is present and visible, but it is lean, deliberate and refined enough that its presence becomes an asset rather than a compromise.
Also known as steel mono stringer stairs, mono stringer floating stairs or central spine stairs, this design achieves a floating tread effect through the strength and precision of structural steel rather than the concealed wall fixings of a cantilevered design.

The look: sharp, architectural, and built for bold spaces.
Steel mono stringer stairs have a quality that rewards the spaces willing to hold them. The precision of the fabricated steel beam, the clean lines of the treads projecting from both sides, the openness of the form on all sides of the flight. It is a staircase with real visual authority.
Paired with timber treads, the steel spine staircase occupies a compelling middle ground. The sharpness of the steel is tempered by the warmth of the wood, creating a combination that is simultaneously industrial and inviting. Concrete treads or stone push the design further toward the architectural end of the spectrum. Each material choice tells a different story about the space around it, and the steel spine form holds all of them equally well.
The floating tread effect is pronounced and immediate. Without side stringers enclosing the flight, light and sightlines pass freely through the staircase from every angle. The staircase takes up minimal visual space while commanding the attention of any room it occupies.
Built for spaces with something to say.
Steel mono stringer stairs are a natural choice for spaces where the design language is deliberate and uncompromising. Contemporary architectural homes with exposed concrete, black steel window frames and large-format materials. Commercial interiors where the staircase is understood from the outset as a feature element. Warehouse conversions and industrial-influenced renovations where raw materials and structural honesty are part of the aesthetic brief.
For open plan homes with double-height voids, the steel spine staircase performs exceptionally well. Positioned in open space rather than running along a wall, it occupies the centre of the room with confidence, the single spine providing a strong vertical element that anchors the composition without enclosing it.
The mono stringer form is also a strong choice for compact spaces. A single central spine requires only the width of the treads, making it one of the most space-efficient staircase designs available for homes or commercial builds where the staircase footprint needs to be kept to a minimum.
Who chooses steel spine stairs?
Steel spine stairs are chosen by architects and designers when the staircase is a key part of the overall design. They suit homeowners building or renovating modern homes with a focus on clean lines and precise detailing.
They’re also a strong fit for commercial spaces like hospitality, retail and offices, where the staircase needs to be both durable and a clear feature. For developers, they work well in high-end apartments or boutique builds where every detail is considered.

How about the same form with a warmer finish?
Our timber spine stairs deliver the same mono stringer design in timber, bringing natural grain and warmth to the central spine form. For the purest floating effect without any visible spine, our cantilevered stairs anchor each tread independently into the wall. Or explore open riser stairs for a conventional stringer approach with the same open, airy quality.
