Solid, seamless, and quietly unforgettable.
Some staircases announce themselves. Others simply belong. Modern box stairs are the latter: a design so considered in its simplicity that it feels less like a staircase was installed and more like it grew from the architecture of the home itself.
At Allwood Stairs, we’ve been crafting modern box staircases for homes across Sydney, the Central Coast and Newcastle for nearly three decades. These are not off-the-shelf solutions. Every one is custom-built, designed to sit seamlessly within the space it occupies and to get better looking with every passing year.
What are box stairs?
Box stairs are a simple, solid style of staircase where each step is built as a full “box” rather than sitting on angled supports. Instead of visible stringers running along the sides, the structure is enclosed, giving the stairs a clean, block-like appearance.
They’re often used in lower-rise settings like decks or outdoor areas, where a sturdy, grounded look works well. Because of their construction, they’re best suited to shorter runs rather than long, continuous flights.
You might also hear them called ‘box steps’ or ‘pancake stairs’.
So, what exactly is a modern box stair?
Modern box stairs take this familiar form and refine it.
At Allwood Stairs, we’ve reworked the traditional box profile to create something more seamless and architectural. From the front, the staircase reads as one continuous run of timber. Clean, calm, and consistent from bottom to top, with no visual breaks or changes in character.
What sets it apart is how that look is achieved.
On the walking side, the steps are designed for a comfortable, natural climb, just as you would expect. On the opposite side, the full tread depth continues through, completing the overall form. This creates a staircase that feels whole and uninterrupted, even where parts of it aren’t used for stepping.
The result is a more considered version of the classic box stair. It keeps the strength and simplicity of the original, but adds a level of refinement that allows it to sit comfortably in modern, design-led homes.

The look: calm, sculptural, and rich in timber character.
Modern box stairs are a design that puts the beauty of timber front and centre. With no open risers drawing the eye through the staircase and no decorative balustrade treatment competing for attention, the focus settles exactly where it should…on the quality, grain and warmth of the wood itself.
The stacked, layered form of the modern box staircase has a quality that some have compared to pyramid stairs or pancake stairs; a series of precise timber slabs building upward with quiet confidence, each one a showcase for the natural character of the species. Strong grain patterns, rich natural colour, the honest edge of timber repeated step by step. It is an understated look, but one with considerable presence.
Tread Nosing for Modern Box Stairs
Nosing on our modern box stairs is minimal or completely square-edged.
Where traditional staircases use a rounded or bullnose profile that projects beyond the riser face, our modern box builds use a sharp, clean-cut edge that sits flush or with only the slightest overhang.
Each tread reads as a precise, deliberate slab. We take this further with a slight undercut or shadow line beneath each tread, creating the illusion that each step is floating; even within a fully enclosed structure.
A small detail? Yes. Yet, it adds considerable refinement to the finished result.
Built for the modern home.
Modern box stairs are a natural choice for contemporary homes. Where design briefs value restraint, materiality and considered form over decoration. The clean, continuous profile works beautifully alongside the architectural features that define modern residential design.
They sit comfortably with finishes like concrete floors, white walls and large windows, without feeling out of place or overdesigned.
The solid form also adds a sense of warmth and stability. Where open stairs can feel light, these feel grounded, bringing texture through timber.
They’re also practical. In homes with young children or pets, they offer a more enclosed and secure option while still looking modern.
A powerful combination staircase component.
Modern box stairs work especially well as part of a combination staircase. It’s a look more architects and designers are choosing.
They create a solid, grounded base at the bottom, giving the staircase a clear sense of weight and arrival as you step into the space.
From there, the design can transition into a lighter, more open upper flight, such as a floating or cantilevered stair. This draws the eye upward and brings a feeling of openness.
It’s the contrast that makes it work so well. Solid and grounded below, light and open above.
Who chooses modern box stairs?
Homeowners building or renovating contemporary homes where materiality and simplicity drive the design brief. Architects and interior designers who want a staircase with strong architectural presence without visual complexity. Anyone drawn to the beauty of timber grain who wants the staircase to put that quality on full display. Builders working on premium new builds where the finish standard is high and every detail is considered.
You’ll find modern box staircases in architect-designed homes across Sydney, in contemporary new builds along the Central Coast, and in considered renovations throughout Newcastle and NSW wherever the design language is modern, restrained and built to last.
